Gust of Wind is a story-driven stealth game, set in a post-apocalyptic world. Mutant gulls have taken over the world and are fighting other tribes with technology left behind by an ancient civilization. Player takes the role of a stealth expert, whose home town is on the verge of being conquered by a host of warriors called the scarves. He's sent along with a crew of gulls to find a compressor to aid their defence.
The missions are set in small but open environments with freedom of movement. Player can sneak and climb their way past the guards with hearing and lightness-based vision, or knock them out with a choke hold or 'doze grenades'. Objects like grappling hooks, cranes, boats, can be also used to reach goals, and when all else fails, player can try their luck in the hectic melee fights that usually end quickly.
There are also plenty of NPCs that player can meet in the missions, choose to help or barter with, or just chat with to hear their backgrounds. Some of them show a preference for stealth or violence, and player's actions often affect the dialog.
Samuli Lautjärvi started developing Gust of Wind in the beginning of 2020. After 8 years of working in game industry companies and startups in Tampere, Finland as a graphic artist, he was making a shift to a freelance career making game trailers and ads. However, to continue game development on more of a hobby basis, he started this project alongside work.
As time passed and Samuli got further in learning coding as well, it started looking more and more like this project could actually turn out to something. He turned to Tero Lillbacka to code a dialog system and -editor, as well as Olli Oja to compose the music.
After 3,5 years of steady development, the game was released on Early Access on Steam on July 31st, 2023.
The game is being made for PC in Unity.
